Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

Conversion Rate Optimization is the practice of improving the percentage of website visitors who complete a desired action — a purchase, a signup, a form submission — typically through testing and refining page design, copy, and user flow.

CRO is a distinct discipline from SEO, though the two are closely related in practice: SEO's job is generally to get the right visitors to a site, while CRO's job is to convert more of those visitors once they've arrived, into whatever outcome the site is optimising for. A site can rank well and drive significant traffic while still converting poorly if the pages themselves don't effectively guide visitors toward the desired action. Common CRO techniques include A/B testing different versions of a page (comparing a genuine visitor split rather than guessing), simplifying and clarifying calls to action, reducing friction in forms or checkout flows, and using visitor behaviour data (heatmaps, session recordings, analytics funnels) to identify where visitors are dropping off before completing the desired action. Because CRO and SEO both ultimately affect a business's bottom line from the same traffic, they're often best treated as complementary parts of a single growth effort rather than entirely separate disciplines — driving more traffic to a poorly-converting page, or improving conversion on a page nobody finds, both leave real value on the table.

Why it matters

Improving conversion rate is often a faster, more directly controllable lever than improving organic rankings, since it doesn't depend on search engine algorithm changes or competitor behaviour — the same traffic a site already has can be made to produce meaningfully more value through CRO work alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is CRO part of SEO?+

They're distinct but complementary disciplines — SEO focuses on getting visitors to a site through organic search, while CRO focuses on converting more of the visitors already arriving, from any traffic source. Many teams treat them as part of a single growth effort since both affect the same underlying business outcome.

What is A/B testing in the context of CRO?+

A/B testing shows two (or more) different versions of a page to genuinely split, randomly-assigned groups of real visitors, then measures which version produces a higher conversion rate — a controlled, evidence-based way to test a change rather than guessing which version performs better.

Can improving conversion rate replace the need for SEO?+

Not really — they address different parts of the funnel. CRO can meaningfully increase value from existing traffic, but a site still needs visitors arriving in the first place for CRO improvements to have anything to work with; the two work best together rather than as substitutes for each other.
