Dwell Time

Dwell time is the amount of time a searcher spends on a page after clicking a search result before returning to the search results page — an informal, indirect signal sometimes discussed as a proxy for content satisfaction.

Dwell time isn't a metric available in standard analytics tools the way pageviews or bounce rate are — it's specifically the gap between a click from a search results page and a return to that same results page, which only the search engine itself can observe directly. Google has never confirmed dwell time as a named, direct ranking factor, and has been fairly consistently vague or dismissive about its exact role. Despite the lack of official confirmation, the underlying logic gets discussed a lot in SEO circles: a searcher who clicks a result and immediately bounces back to try a different one might be read as a signal that the page didn't satisfy them, whereas someone who stays longer might have found what they needed. Whether or how directly Google actually uses this as a ranking input remains genuinely unconfirmed and is a topic of ongoing SEO industry speculation rather than settled fact. It's often confused with, but is distinct from, bounce rate (a website analytics metric based on single-page sessions) and time-on-page (a website analytics metric with no search-engine round-trip component at all).

Why it matters

Regardless of dwell time's unconfirmed direct ranking impact, content that genuinely satisfies a searcher's intent quickly and thoroughly — the same thing that would plausibly produce a longer dwell time if it were measured — is worth aiming for on its own merits, independent of any specific ranking mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Is dwell time a confirmed Google ranking factor?+

No — Google has not confirmed dwell time as a direct, named ranking factor, and has been fairly consistently vague about it publicly. It's a widely discussed concept in SEO circles, but its exact role, if any, remains unconfirmed rather than settled.

Can I measure my own site's dwell time?+

Not directly — dwell time specifically requires knowing when a visitor returns to the search results page, which only the search engine can observe. Standard analytics tools can show related but distinct metrics like time-on-page, which isn't the same measurement.

What's the difference between dwell time and bounce rate?+

Bounce rate measures single-page sessions within your own site analytics, regardless of where the visitor goes afterward. Dwell time specifically measures the gap before a return to the search results page — a search-engine-side concept your own analytics can't directly observe.
