Local SEO

Local SEO is the practice of optimising a business's online presence to be found by people searching for products or services in a specific geographic area.

Local SEO covers a mix of factors: a business's Google Business Profile listing, consistent name-address-phone (NAP) information across the web, local-specific content and keywords, customer reviews, and the same core organic SEO fundamentals — technical health, content quality, backlinks — applied with a local focus. Google typically shows two distinct sets of local-intent results: the "local pack" or "3-pack" — a map with three highlighted business listings, driven largely by Google Business Profile signals — and the normal organic results below it, which behave like any other organic ranking. A business can rank well in one without necessarily ranking well in the other, since they're influenced by somewhat different factors.

Why it matters

For any business serving a specific local area — from a single shopfront to a multi-location chain — showing up for "near me" and local-intent searches is often where a meaningful share of real customer demand actually is. Getting local SEO right means paying attention to both the local pack and normal organic rankings, since they're related but not identical.

How Illumae helps

Illumae tracks your organic Google search rankings for any keyword you choose to monitor, including local-intent searches. It does not track the separate Google Maps local pack — the map and three listings that often appear above organic results — so if 3-pack tracking is a priority, you'll need a dedicated tool for that alongside Illumae.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the local pack and normal organic rankings?+

The local pack is the map with three highlighted business listings, driven heavily by your Google Business Profile. Normal organic rankings are the regular list of results below it, influenced by the same fundamentals — content, technical health, backlinks — as any other search result.

Does Illumae track local pack rankings?+

No — Illumae tracks organic Google search rankings only, not the separate Google Maps local pack. That’s an important distinction for any local business relying heavily on "near me" visibility specifically.

Is NAP consistency still important for local SEO?+

Yes. Keeping your business name, address, and phone number consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, and other directories remains a foundational trust signal for local search.
